Organizing Simply Takes Work

No matter how long you put it off, the dreadful task of organizing your attic is inevitable. There will come a day when you will have no choice but to get your hands dirty if you want some extra space…and…who doesn’t? A neat and tidy attic will free up much needed space in your house and will give you peace of mind knowing that your items are organized and in the right place.

The first thing you should do is mentally prepare yourself for this task by visualizing your attic space the way you would like for it to be organized. You could even draw up plans and measurements for the different requirements you will need to insure that you utilize all the space you have. Sit down and meticulously plan out the entire project to avoid hiccups during the work and regrets later on.

Once you have your storage plans in place, start making a checklist of all the items you will most likely be storing in your attic and how often you will need them. This will give you an idea on how much available space is required and where to store certain items for easy access. It is so much easier to put things back when the arrangement is well planned and organized.

Next, review each item and keep only the things you really need. Anything that you haven’t used in a while is a strong candidate for the trash can (things that bring up some sweet memories are definitely an exception). Clear away the clutter in your attic, and start cleaning to set the stage for a great-looking and well-organized storage space. During the cleaning, you should also run a safety check by inspecting each and every corner (especially the floor boards) and see if there is something that looks weak and needs attention.

Once the attic is ready to be filled, select the type(s) of containers that will hold all your stored stuff. This is a very important decision because the right selection, in terms of size and shape, will enable you to complete this task with the desired outcome. The containers should meet the criteria of durability, space and size so that they can be easily filled with stuff and moved up there without any problem.

After filling up your containers, don’t forget to label them. If the labeling is skipped, you will be at a loss when you go back to look for something. You will eventually end up opening all the storage bins one by one which will leave you frustrated and with the uphill task to reorganize the entire attic all over again!

So…instead of procrastinating, just start the ‘attic organization’ project and get it over with as soon as possible. Your attic will be organized and access to things will be a breeze. Start enjoying the benefits of your hard work!

Happy organizing!
