Expert Tips for Moving Across the Country

Planning a cross-country move can be an exciting yet daunting task. Whether you're moving for a job, family, or just for a change of scenery, it's crucial to plan carefully to ensure a smooth transition. Here are some expert tips to make your cross-country move as stress-free as possible.

1. Start Planning Early

The key to a successful move is early planning. As soon as you know you're moving, start making a checklist of tasks you need to accomplish. This list should include things like researching moving companies, packing, updating your address with banks and other institutions, and so forth. The earlier you start, the less overwhelmed you'll feel as the moving date approaches.  There are some great blogs on the web that give detailed lists on packing and moving.

2. Declutter Before You Packcouple with moving boxes

Moving is the perfect opportunity to declutter and get rid of items you no longer need. Take time to sort through your belongings and decide what to keep, sell, donate, or throw away. Not only will this reduce the amount of stuff you have to pack and move, but it can also cut down on your moving costs.  My suggestion, have a small (or large) dumpster set in your driveway if you have lived there over 10 years, you are more likely to get rid of things if you have a container to throw them into, and obviously if there are clothes, picture frames, containers, anything that is reusable, call a local veterans organization, Goodwill, or shelter to donate items to.

3. Hire a Reliable Moving Company

When moving across the country, it's often best to hire professionals. Look for a reputable moving company that specializes in long-distance moves. Ask for referrals, read reviews, and get quotes from multiple companies to ensure you're getting the best deal. Remember, cheapest isn't always best - consider the quality of service too.  These days it just makes sense to check their ratings on the web and read reviews BEFORE you hire them.

4. Create an Inventory List

Keeping track of all your possessions during a move can be challenging. Creating an inventory list can help. Not only will it aid in keeping track of your items, but it will also be useful for insurance purposes in case anything gets lost or damaged.  Take pictures of EVERYTHING in the home before you pack or have a mover pack for you, that way you will have proof BEFORE damage occurs in case you need to file a claim with the moving or insurance company.

5. Pack Smart

Pack your items strategically. Use sturdy boxes, bubble wrap, and packing paper to protect your belongings. Label each box clearly with its contents and the room it belongs to. Consider packing an essentials box with items you'll need immediately after the move, like toiletries, clothes, and basic kitchen items.  I have found Ace Hardware's and the dumpsters behind strip shopping centers are great places to get boxes.  Some retailers will allow you in their back storage rooms to remove boxes, sometimes it costs them dollars to get rid of them.  I have also found that Home Depot is a great place to buy moving boxes more affordably than some of the truck rental outfits.

6. Update Your Address

Don't forget to update your address with the post office, banks, insurance providers, and any subscriptions or memberships you have. You should also inform family and friends about your new address.  Take pictures of your credit cards before the move so you will have a good list of those in case they get lost in the move, or you failed to notify any of them of the new address.

7. Plan Your Travel

Decide how you'll get to your new home. Will you drive, fly, or take a train? Consider the cost, time, and your comfort level with each option. If you have pets or kids, think about what would be easiest for them as well.

8. Stay Organized

Keep all your moving-related documents in one place. This includes quotes and receipts from your moving company, travel reservations, and any other important paperwork. Staying organized will help you keep track of costs and make sure nothing slips through the cracks.

9. Prepare for Arrival

Research your new town ahead of time. Find out where the nearest grocery store, bank, post office, and hospital are. If you're moving with kids, look into schools and childcare options. The more prepared you are, the smoother your transition will be.  I would try to arrive a few days before the movers do in case you need to have to home sprayed for bugs, painting done, yard work arranged for, internet connected, utilities turned on, or you just want to get to know the new area and neighbors before settling in.  You could also have an Attic Lift installed before hand to make storing things upstairs easier and safer as well.

10. Take Care of Yourself

Moving can be stressful, so don't forget to take care of yourself. Get plenty of rest, eat healthy, stay hydrated, and take breaks when needed. Remember, it's okay to ask for help if you're feeling overwhelmed.  Hiring a local person or company to help you unpack can be very helpful and get you settled in the new home much sooner.

In conclusion, a cross-country move is a big undertaking, but with careful planning and organization, it can be a smooth and even enjoyable experience. Happy moving!
