Versalift Attic Lifts Q & A
Frequently Asked Questions About VersaLift Garage Attic Lifts
General Questions / Made in USA (Oklahoma City, OK)
Q. What is a garage attic lift?
A. A garage attic lift is an electric storage lift designed to safely move boxes, bins, totes, and household items between your garage floor and attic storage area. Instead of carrying heavy items up an attic ladder, the lift raises and lowers the load at the push of a button.
Q. What are the benefits of an attic lift?
A. VersaLift Attic Lift helps:
-
Reduce the risk of falls from attic ladders
-
Eliminate lifting heavy boxes overhead
-
Make attic storage more accessible
-
Free up garage floor space
-
Reduce clutter inside the home
-
Store seasonal items more efficiently
-
Avoid recurring costs of off-site storage units
- Give peace of mind knowing your keepsakes are safe
Q. What types of items can I store in the attic using a VersaLift?
A. Most homeowners use attic lifts for:
-
Holiday decorations
-

Camping gear
-

-
Keepsakes
-
Seasonal clothing
-
Sports equipment

Q. Can I ride on the attic lift?
A. Absolutely NOT. VersaLift is designed strictly for lifting storage items — never people or animals.
Riding the lift could result in severe injury or death, including:
-
Falling onto the concrete garage floor
-
Crushing injuries near the attic opening
-
Hand or finger injuries from moving components
The purpose of the lift is to reduce injuries associated with carrying heavy items up attic ladders — not transport people.
Q. Is VersaLift considered an elevator?
A. No. VersaLift is a residential storage lift designed to transport goods only. It is not designed, engineered, or approved for transporting people.
Q. Can VersaLift be used commercially?
A. VersaLift is primarily designed for residential use. However, many organizations and businesses have creatively used VersaLift systems for moving boxed storage items in unique applications. Check with your local codes.
Q. What happens to the gap between the ceiling and floor of the Attic?
A. VersaLift has 4 springs inside the legs of the carrier that can stretch up to 24" to accommodate most floor joists. There is nothing for you to adjust. When the lift goes up through the opening the ceiling panel which is larger that the opening catches on the underneath side of the sheet rock, and the carrier which is 3/4" smaller than opening travels until it gets flush with the attic at which point it shuts itself off automatically
Safety Questions
Q. What safety features does VersaLift include?
A. VersaLift includes multiple built-in safety systems, including:
-
Auto-stop upper and lower travel limits
-
Electric motor brake
-
Spring-loaded rocker switch dead-man control operation

If triggered:
-
The lift automatically stops
-
The reset switch trips
-
You simply press the reset button to resume operation
This system helps prevent tangled cables and expensive repairs.
Q. Can children operate the lift?
A. Children should never operate the lift unsupervised. Many homeowners use the optional key-lock controls or Auto-Shutter Door system for additional safety.
Q. What is the Auto-Shutter Door?
A. The Auto-Shutter Door is an optional accessory that automatically closes the ceiling opening when the lift is lowered.
It is especially useful for:
-
Bonus room installations
-
Pantry installations
-
Homes with pets
-
Homes with toddlers or small children
Q. Does VersaLift have a fire-rated door option?
A. Yes. VersaLift offers an optional 30-minute fire-rated ceiling panel for installations where local building codes or inspectors require a fire-rated barrier between garage and attic spaces.
Weight Capacity & Storage Questions
Q. How much weight can the VersaLift hold?
A.
-
Model 24 = 200 lb lifting capacity
-
Model 32 = 250 lb lifting capacity
Q. Why not build a 500 lb attic lift?
A. Most residential attic structures are not designed for concentrated heavy loads. In real-world usage, safely loading and unloading extremely heavy items near an attic opening becomes impractical and dangerous. Most residential attics need a lot of modification before lifting 500 lbs within a small footprint. Plus, how are you going to lift 250-500 lbs when it gets to the attic? Fork Lift? If they're standard sized totes (28 gallon) you can get two on a Model 24, and after all, you're only pushing a button to get it up or down.
VersaLift focuses on realistic, safer residential storage applications rather than oversized weight claims.
Q. Can I overload the lift occasionally?
A. No. Always stay within the rated lifting capacity.
Exceeding weight limits can:
-
Damage the lift
-
Stress attic framing
-
Reduce cable life
-
Create dangerous operating conditions
Q. Can I store heavy furniture in the attic?
A. Generally, large heavy furniture is not recommended unless your attic structure has been professionally evaluated and reinforced if necessary. See our Attic Weight Section for ideas.
Q. How much attic floor weight is safe?
A. This depends on:
-
Joist size
-
Joist spacing
-
Span length
-
Type of attic framing
-
Whether the attic was designed for storage
If unsure, consult a structural engineer or qualified contractor.
Installation Questions
Q. How difficult is installation?
A. Many homeowners, builders, and handyman companies install VersaLift successfully. Most installers say the framing work is the hardest part.
VersaLift includes:
-
Detailed illustrated manuals
-
Installation videos
-
Technical support assistance
Q. Can I install VersaLift myself?
A. If you are experienced with framing, and can follow instructions many homeowners install the lift themselves. Otherwise, we recommend hiring a qualified contractor or handyman. We have detailed videos on how to install.
Q. How long does installation usually take?
A. Most installations take approximately:
-
Usually less than 1 day for experienced installers
-
If the lift area has been framed out, the assembly and install of the lift takes about 3 hours.
Q. Does the lift require a dedicated electrical circuit?
A. No. The VersaLift motor only draws about 5 amps and typically operates on a standard 110V outlet.
Many homeowners connect it to the attic lighting circuit so power shuts off when attic lights are turned off.
Q. Does VersaLift come pre-assembled?
A. VersaLift arrives partially assembled and is designed for step-by-step installation using the included instruction manual.
Q. Can VersaLift fit between engineered floor trusses?
A. Yes. The Model 24 was specifically designed to fit between many engineered joists spaced 24 inches on center.
