How Do I Start Organizing My Garage?

Posted by Sarah Pearson on

The average American household has a garage, but not everyone uses it for its intended purpose. Some people use the garage to store things they are too lazy to take inside or outside, or they simply don't have room in their house. Well if you're one of the people who can't seem to get your act together when it comes time to put away your stuff and live an organized life, we've compiled some great tips on how to get started with organizing your garage so you can be more productive and less stressed out.

Where to Start?

Where do I start when I go to clean out my garage? That is a question most ask when it’s time to do the daunting task of cleaning out the garage. Here are a few tips that we think will help you!

Clean the garage floor - This is very important because it will allow more room for your projects and prevent stains from old oil spills or other liquids stored in the garage. Another reason why you need to clean your garage flooring before garage organization is to avoid dust from garage floors & garage carpet getting on garage cabinets and garage door handles. Clean the garage floor thoroughly with cleaning solution and water, use a broom or vacuum to get rid of all debris so it will be easier for Garage organizing products such as garage storage racks.

Have “Zones” -  Begin grouping like items with other like items. Think of zones like departments in a store, such as the garden area, the tools section, and so on. That way you know where each item "lives." With this zone concept, you can think as small (three basic zones) or as big as you need to.

Plan Your Storage - Estimate your storage space and begin storing items in the proper place. Utilize your vertical space! Also you need to make sure that all harmful materials and tools are stored in a locked cabinet away from children and pets.

Once It’s Done…

Once you have successfully organized your garage, the last step is to keep this organizing strategy going. It’s good to organize your garage about twice a year. Garages are high-traffic areas so the more often you organize this space, the less time it will take. As the experts point out, once an area is organized, it doesn't take as long to clean it. When you’ve completed the garage transformation, make sure to take before and after pictures. It will look like a new space! Congrats on transforming your chaos into order with some simple steps. You deserve it!
